We Are New Hell

New Hell is a dynamic and impactful band from Providence, Rhode Island, formed in 2017, that melds black metal, death metal, grindcore, hardcore, and punk into a powerful musical expression. The group, consisting of Brandon Lemire (vocals, guitar), Curt Klump (guitar), Paul Lonardo (bass), and Mikey Marcotte (drums), is known for their aggressive yet deeply engaging sound.

Their music, a reflection of their views on society, is laced with politically and socially conscious lyrics, challenging American societal norms and religious dogmas. The band has evolved over time, with their songs transitioning from direct aggression to more complex, heavier compositions, while maintaining their original intensity. This evolution is showcased in their releases like “Death, Rot, and Ruin,” “Phosphorus” EPs, and an untitled split with The Slow Death of Gaia.

The band's latest work, their self-titled debut album "New Hell," is their most focused and comprehensive project. It features songs like "Age of Sin," which confronts the Catholic Church's stance on LGBTQ+ rights and societal divisions. This album stands as a testament to their growth and position as a politically engaged black metal band, making a significant mark in their musical journey.

“New Hell really found their sound when they debuted the track “Age of Sin,” which opens the album, finding the right mix of their caustic yet bashing sound as Brandon tore into the dogmas of religion and pointed out its hypocrisy throughout far and recent history. Every track that follows is a slow (but heavy) burner that instills a certain hopelessness and defeat in the listener, just how black metal should.

The beginning of “Controlled Burn” is one of the best examples of the band slow-cooking you over the pyre that rises in the wake of our destruction before it takes you on the blast beat-fueled death throes. The closer on the album, “Suffering,” feels like the final screams someone belts out as they are dragged to the depths of hell never to see the light again, Brandon’s final shrieks giving the album a true sense of finality. Ending one of the best walks through Armageddon.”

”Operating out of Providence, Rhode Island, New Hell are a quartet who combine elements of black metal, death, thrash, grind, punk and hardcore to create a sound that hits both timeless and true. If you were around back when bands like Fall Of The Bastards, From Ashes Rise, even The Swarm were dominating turntables, then New Hell will scorch you like a fiery blast from the past. But if you’ve never heard an American band play upbeat, triumphant melodic black metal with a punk sort of combustibility and the focused urgency of grindcore then don’t let us stand in your way any longer. New Hell charge head-on against the trends and clear a mighty, burning swath for themselves.”

“The next song, ‘Ashes’, is named for what will be left of you after you hear it. The song is a super-heated race, thanks to the head-long galloping and battering fury of the drums, the fever in the riffing, and the flesh-scorching temperature of the shrieked vocals.

But there’s more to the song than a searing adrenaline kick. The simmering and blaring melodies in the music have a gripping effect and leave a vivid afterimage. There is a feeling of tension and angst in those sounds, as well as a level of oppression and bleakness that seems like surrender — or perhaps just grim and gritty determination.

‘Ashes’ is one of five tracks on an EP named Phosphorus by New Hell from Providence, Rhode Island. It will be out on May 2nd. Very eager to hear the rest.”

“New Hell is a four piece band from Providence, Rhode Island who formed in 2017, from the looks of things.  New Hell play a killer style of music that incorporates elements of hardcore, punk, black metal, crust, and grindcore within their sound.  Musically, New Hell can be loosely compared to bands such as Deathrite, SVFFER, WVRM, and other like-minded bands.  Since forming in 2017, New Hell have released an eight song demo titled Kill Your Masters in March of 2017.  Death, Rot, and Ruin is the band's latest EP, which was released on March 2nd, 2019.  On Death, Rot, And Ruin, New Hell offer up five tracks of vicious and brutal as fuck sounding hardcore, punk, black metal, crust, and grindcore.  Overall, Death, Rot, and Ruin makes for an awesome listen and definitely should not be missed.  Highly recommended!  Enjoy!”
